Meet Our Team

Kathy Cramer, Executive Director

Kathy moved to Hilton Head Island in 1977 from New Jersey then attended Erskine college where she received her degree in Elementary and Special Education. She also received her master’s degree in Education from Cambridge College in Boston in 1995. Over her career in special education Kathy taught for over 33 years in public schools across Beaufort County. 

While she was teaching Kathy was the Co-Director of Area 8 Special Olympics and worked to fulfill her dream of seeing Special Olympics as an official school sport. Her dream became a reality and the Beaufort County School District now recognizes and supports over 400 Special Olympics athletes in a variety of sports on a weekly basis. In 2015 Kathy founded and became the Executive Director of SOAR Special Recreation.


Jim Lewis, Director of Sports Programming

Jim has lived and worked in the Hilton Head area for 18 years. With experience in both corporate management and small business ownership, Jim brings a new perspective to the organization.

Being the parent of an adult child with intellectual disabilities, Jim understands the unique challenges faced by parents as they strive for inclusion and community for their child.


Morgan Smith, Director of Youth Programs

Morgan was born and raised on Hilton head Island and has been volunteering with Special Olympics since she was in 6th grade. She was immediately passionate about working with individuals who have special needs and creating a better community. Morgan moved to Virginia in 2018 where she worked for multiple summer camps focusing on adaptive outdoor recreation and started a program for adults to participate in music therapy with puppets. She also worked as a Direct Support Professional in group homes designed for more independent living.
