Our Journey: Nurturing Inclusion, Empowerment, and Growth
Planting the Seeds
In 2016, a seed of compassion and a vision for inclusivity took root in the heart of Lowcountry. Kathy Cramer, a dedicated special education school teacher, recognized a pressing need for recreational opportunities and after-school activities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Witnessing her students return home to limited options for enrichment, Kathy resolved to make a difference.
Early Support and Collaboration
In its nascent stages, our organization found nurturing support from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, receiving a grant that provided the initial momentum for our endeavors. Partnering with the Island Rec Center, our programs found a welcoming home from which to flourish and grow.
Founding Years
Buoyed by the support of our community and fueled by a shared passion for empowerment, Soar took flight. In 2018, we took a significant step forward, formalizing our status as an independent non-profit entity. With the establishment of a dedicated board, we embarked on a journey of self-governance and empowerment.
From Strength to Strength
From our humble beginnings with 53 athletes, Soar has blossomed into a vibrant community serving over 450 athletes across Beaufort and Jasper Counties. With plans underway to extend our reach into Collington, our commitment to inclusion knows no bounds.
Empowering Partnerships
The recognition of Special Olympics as a school sport by Beaufort County and Jasper County marked a significant milestone in our journey. This designation not only facilitated transportation during the school day but also opened doors for after-school participation, mirroring the opportunities afforded to traditional sports.
